Britt is hosting “Taste of Summer,” to officially open the 2011 Britt season, together with the Chamber of Commerce, the Jacksonville Oregon Business Association and community leaders.

Taste of Summer” will be Saturday, June 11 in downtown Jacksonville. The day will include a host of activities for families and adults alike, including a matinee concert with Britt favorite Michael Franti.

Highlights:

Hot Air Balloon rides (tethered rides, weather/winds permitting), 8-11 a.m., Bigham Knoll field, suggested donation of $3-$5

•     Picnic provided by Ray’s Food Place, Courthouse grounds, 11 a.m. – 2p.m.; prices vary

•     Children’s activities on Courthouse grounds, 5th Street, 11 a.m. – 2p.m., basketball toss, baseball throw activity, crafts, etc.

•     Wine walk featuring 12 local wineries, 12-4 p.m. Tickets available on 3rd Street; tastings will be located in shops throughout downtown.

Wine tasting: $14; Glass: $6

•     Live music by five different local bands, 12-4 p.m., no charge: Andy Casad, Kites & Crows, Christina & Velvet Bleu, Generation Jones, Allison & Victor

•     Demonstrations by visual artists from Art Presence

•     Food booths by local restaurants

•     Street performers

•     Local shops and restaurants will be open throughout the afternoon

The Historic Presbyterian Church is holding a Strawberry Festival from 1-3 on their lawn.

The Beekman Bank will be open from 10-3. This is a great – and rare – opportunity to see inside one of Oregon’s OLDEST financial institutions – untouched for 100 years! Larry Smith will be the docent on duty.

There is no admission fee to the downtown event; prices for food and wine tastings will vary. Shops and restaurants throughout Jacksonville will also be open throughout the afternoon.

Michael Franti and Friends will perform a children’s matinee on the Britt hill at 3 p.m. on June 11. Tickets for the matinee are $14.50
per person, and free for children two and under. Franti and his band Spearhead will perform at Britt that evening in a 7:30 p.m.

History Saturday in the Historic Cemetery:

Our program on June 11 will cover the history of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) and a tour of this Section of the cemetery. Along the way stories of some of those resting in this area of the cemetery will be shared with visitors.

The programs take place in the Jacksonville Cemetery and start promptly at 10:00 a.m. Please meet your Docents at the Sexton’s Tool House, near the flag pole, at the top of the Cemetery Road. Parking is available in the cemetery grounds.
