The Review just received this note from Mayor Paul Becker to City Administrator Jeff Alvis regarding the ongoing issue of the use of sandwich board signs in the city limits, specifically the business core district. Earlier this summer, the mayor took unilateral action after complaints were filed alleging certain businesses were violating the city’s sign code. In so doing, the mayor went out on a limb in support of the business community which relies on such advertising to attract customers to their locations. Until such time as the City Council adopts a new sign ordinance, the following shall apply:

“Jeff…  As we discussed earlier, I hereby direct that all complaints arising from the use of sandwich boards within the City be directed to me and I will pursue the complaint, both personally and with our Police Chief should the complaint have merit.  Complaints are not to be relayed directly to the Police Dept… I will be the conduit for that.

This policy will remain in effect until the revised code covering signs and sandwich boards is adopted by the Council.  This policy applies only to sandwich board signs and no other form or type of sign.”
